EEG

Patient pre-test instruction for EEG/Evoked potentials

EEG: The electro-encephalography (EEG), also known as a brain wave test, is graphical record of the electrical activity of the brain. It records brain’s electrical activity and pattern and helps in making diagnosis and differentiating various disorders like epilepsy, brain infections, sleep disorders etc.

VEP: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) is a test to measure the brain wave activity that occurs in response to visual stimulation. It helps in diagnosing and evaluating disease related to eye and brain.

BAER: Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) is a test to measure the brain wave activity that occurs in response to sound. It helps in diagnosing and evaluating disease related to brain and hearing problem.

Prior to Test

  • Tell your doctor about the medications you are taking

  • Wash your hair the night before the test

  • Take normal diet prior to the test.

Description of Test

EEG

Before an EEG begins, technologist attaches approximately 16–21 electrodes to a person's scalp using an electrically conductive, washable paste. The electrodes are placed on the head in a standard pattern based on head circumference measurements.
For the test, a person lies on a bed, padded table, or comfortable chair and is asked to relax and remain still while measurements are being taken. During the test procedure, a person may be asked to breathe slowly or quickly. Visual stimuli such as flashing lights or a patterned board may be used to stimulate certain types of brain activity. Throughout the procedure, the electroencephalography unit makes a continuous graphic record of the person's brain activity, or brain waves

VEP

Electrodes are placed on your scalp. The earphones give off a brief sound and electrodes record the brain activity. You do not need to be awake for this test.

BAER

Electrodes are placed on your scalp and on each earlobe. The earphones give off a brief sound and electrodes record the brain activity. You do not need to be awake for this test.

Approximately time needed for the test

EEG

An EEG usually takes no more than one hour, although long-term monitoring is often used for diagnosis of seizure disorders.

VEP

Time needed for the test is not more than half an hour.

BAER

Time needed for the test is not more than half an hour.

After Test

  • Once the test is complete, you will be able to resume your daily activities.

Result

  • Your doctor will analyze the test and the will get report in a day or two.

EEG is done for diagnosis of epilepsy and for evaluation of symptoms like:

  • Episodes of loss of sensorium or unresponsiveness

  • Abnormal behavior or change in behavior

  • Memory loss

  • Forgetfulness

  • Confusion state
